The problem with buying quartz from these huge retailers is that it’s not their main focus. They sell a ton of different things, and countertops are often an afterthought, or something they sell for the sake of being a ‘one stop shop’ for kitchen renovations.

When you’ve got an entire kitchen renovation to do, it’s definitly convenient to get everything from the same store - but you will be doing your kitchen a major disservice.

Things like hand tools, small quantities of lumber, common repair parts; those all make sense to get from the same place. But unlike those products, it really does make a difference where you buy countertops, because the big box stores don’t actually make your countertop. Instead they work out deals with local contractors to fabricate and install them for you.

As part of those deals they are trying to pay the local companies as little as possible, and not because they want to pass those savings to you, but because they want to maximize their profits. Their prices aren’t cheaper than buying directly from a local fabricator, and in many cases they are more expensive.

They’re just a middle man and they are keeping you from getting to know the people you are actually going to hire. By letting them choose your contractor you’re literally rolling the dice and hoping that they select a skilled craftsman for you. This huge chain of stores sells just about anything you may need for your home. If you’re building a deck, they have deck screws and bags of concrete for the footings. If you need a hammer they have 20 to choose from. If you need to patch your driveway they carry small bags of asphalt.

Home Depot sells one of the best brands of quartz, called Silestone, as well as a couple others that aren’t as well known. Silestone is a fine product and I wholeheartedly recommend it. But you are forced to choose what color you want from a small sample that’s just a few inches wide at best.

To make matters worse, they’re far from the cheapest. According to Quality Stone Concepts, a stone fabricator in Virginia, they are way overcharging their customers and pulling the classic bait and switch.

Lowe’s

When it comes to buying quartz countertops Lowe’s is basically Home Depot reincarnated. They also sell Silestone and a brand called allen + roth, which I admit that I know nothing about other than Lowe’s sells them. They’re probably decent quality but I would not consider them one of the major players in the quartz industry.

IKEA

The Swedish giant is famous for offering ‘build-it-yourself’ furniture for incredibly low prices. A dorm-room staple, IKEA also has higher-end furniture that you wouldn’t guess came from IKEA. In addition to that, they have everything you need for a complete kitchen renovation from cupboards, to major appliances, to storage, and even cooking utensils.

I want to like IKEA, I really do. I love walking around the store and trying to resist buying all the cool things that seem to be around every corner, but countertops are definitely not one of those things.

IKEA sells a brand of quartz countertops called Caesarstone. Reviews are mixed for them. Some people love Caesarstone and lot’s of people do nothing but complain about them. They aren’t a brand that I would recommend based on what I have been told by multiple fabricators. On more than one occassion I have been told that they sell mediocre products and have customer service to match.

Summary

The most important thing to learn from this page is that all big box stores subcontract out to local companies, and that you can hire them directly instead of letting Home Depot, Lowe’s, or IKEA act as a middle man. By cutting out the middle man you’ll more than likely get cheaper prices, a larger selection, much better customer service, and you’ll have a true countertop professional asnwering your questions.

Opening the project file in Adobe After Effects

Before we can get started you’ll first need to open the file that you downloaded from Mixkit.

Inside you’ll find a single folder containing a further two files. The first is an assets folder called footage, the second is the project file itself, titled 3D Logo Animation. It’s important to export the main folder containing the two files to your computer. As both will be required for After Effects to locate the assets used in the project. Simply drag and drop the main folder or manually export it to somewhere on your desktop.

With this done you can open the folder which should now be saved locally on your desktop and double-click on 3D Logo Animation. This will open the project with After Effects. If for any reason your computer does not recognize this as an After Effects file by default. You can open it by navigating to file, open project and finally selecting it manually from within the After Effects interface.

Editing the logo or replacing it with text

Now that the project is open in After Effects we can start editing! First look to the project management section of After Effects, where the files used in this composition are located. You’ll find a composition called “Logo Here”. Double-click on this to open it. You’ll notice the interface updates and you’ll now see only the logo image isolated in the preview.

In the timeline panel below choose the graphic by clicking on it and then simply press the delete button on your keyboard or alternatively click the small eyeball icon to the left of the layer name to hide it. With this hidden or removed. We can now look at replacing it with a new graphic.

We now have two options. We can add a new graphic or alternatively we can simply use the text tool within After Effects. For this tutorial, we’ll show how you can do both but we’ll be using a new logo ourselves.

Before you can add a new logo you’ll first need to import one. Return to the project section of After Effects, where you clicked on “Logo Here” moments ago. In an empty area right-click and choose Import and then File. From here you can browse your local files and select a saved image that you wish to import.

This will add the newly imported image to the project manager. Simply click on the new image and drag it down to the timeline panel where the old logo file was previously.

You’ll see your new graphic appear in the preview window. Here you can also resize it by dragging the four points located in each corner of the image if you need to.

If you would rather just have a text heading instead of a logo

Once the preview image has been deleted. Select the text tool from the top of the After Effects interface. Then click anywhere inside the preview window. This will create a new text layer that you can edit by typing your chosen word or phrase. If you would like to adjust the placement. Choose the selection tool, highlighted in our screenshot and then click and drag the text to the desired location.

You can change the font, sizing, and color by choosing the options under the character window. Which is found on the left by default with the text tool selected. Make sure you have the text highlighted otherwise any changes will not be applied to the existing text.

Changing the background color and tagline

Now with either your new logo or text finished. Let’s make some final changes to our design. First, click on “Render Me” to bring us back to the full project view and double-click on Text_01 from the timeline panel. This will quickly allow us to edit the tagline. Here you can replace the existing text or simply delete the tagline if you would prefer.

Finally, we can use the built-in controllers to edit the background and other small details of the design. In the timeline panel choose the small arrow to the left of the layer called “Main Controller” this will expand the options below it. Then do the same for “Effects”. Here you’ll find a large collection of settings for you to explore.

We’ll be updating Background 2 in this example. However, the process is the same for each of the options provided. Repeat the same step again, clicking the small arrow to the left of Background 2. This will reveal the color options for this section of the template. Click in the color viewer and another panel will appear. From here select your favorite color and click OK. You’ll see your template now has a bright new background.

Save and then it’s rendering time

With the work done it’s time to save your changes. You may have been doing this as you went along but just in case you have not saved your work yet, it’s best to do so now. Navigate to File in the top right corner of the interface and choose Save from the drop-down menu.

Now let’s render our project. We’ll be using the base render method in this example. To get started choose File once more and this time Export. Within Export choose “Add to Render Queue”. A new interface panel will appear where the timeline was previously. Here you’ll want to click on two options and set them up as your project requires. In our example we’ll be saving this as a Quicktime .mov file.

First, click on the Output Module. Which will be “Lossless” by default. This will bring up a small menu, now under format you’ll want to change this to Quicktime before pressing OK. Finally under Output To click the link and this will allow you to choose the location your new render will be saved to within your computer.

When you’re finished, click render. This is located to the top right of the render panel.

We’re done! You can now open your newly rendered video and watch it back. If you’re unhappy with the outcome you can always open the saved version again and edit it as much as you like.

What happens when a new line is installed?

Microsoft Windows Vista build 5308 uses Windows Update (herein called WU) to get the latest drivers for the SoundMAX chipset. These drivers stutter, hiss, snap, crackle, and pop, nonstop and do not have support for digital audio. Windows 10 is an unusual release for Microsoft: if you have a licensed version of Windows 7 or 8/8.1, it will very easily upgrade to Windows 10—you don't even need to enter a licence key. Clean installations, however, are a bit trickier: you do need to enter a licence key, and your Windows 7/8 key probably won't work.

Install vmware free. Fortunately, if you're running Windows 7 or 8, and you really want to use your free Windows 10 licence key to perform a clean installation rather than upgrade, there is a solution. It's pretty convoluted, but it works.

First, you need to do an in-place upgrade to Windows 10. You can do this via Windows Update, or if Windows Update isn't playing ball you can use the direct download tool: English/American/German/French/Italian/Dutch. If you use the download tool, make sure you select 'Upgrade this PC now.' It goes without saying that, before you install any new operating system, you should back up any important data beforehand.

Once the upgrade has completed, make sure you've been activated by Microsoft. Open up the new Settings app, then head to Update & Security, Activation. It will say on the right whether you're activated or not (see image). Also note down what version of Windows 10 you have (Home, Pro).

If you haven't yet been activated, you can try forcing it via command prompt: run cmd.exe as an administrator, then type slmgr.vbs /ato. You may need to try a few times, as the activation servers were being hit quite hard.

Now you need to install Windows 10 again! Grab the Windows 10 download tool and run it. This time, select 'Create installation media for another PC.' Now, proceed with a clean installation of Windows 10 (select 'Custom: Install Windows only' when prompted.) When it asks you for a product key, click Skip. If it asks you multiple times, just keep hitting Skip.

Once you've installed Windows 10, it should activate normally. Again, you might need to manually slam the servers using slmgr.vbs /ato. Voilà: a clean installation of Windows 10.

Currently, it isn't clear if you can take your freebie Windows 10 licence key and use it to install Windows 10 on another machine. Some users are reporting that ProduKey, Magic Jelly Bean, and other key-viewing tools have enabled them to get a new Windows 10 licence key that can be used on another machine, but some users are just getting a generic licence key that isn't transferable. Your mileage may vary.

Caveats and other gotchas

Obviously, it's crazy that you have to go through a full OS installation just to upgrade a licence key. It would be a lot easier and faster if Microsoft provided some kind of tool that converted Windows 7/8 keys to Windows 10.

If you bought a retail copy of Windows 10, this guide doesn't apply to you at all: you'll have a Windows 10 licence key that can be used directly during the installation process.

Another option, rather than installing Windows 10 twice, is to click the small 'change what to keep' button during installation, and then select 'nothing' from the following screen. This will delete all of your files, apps, and settings. This will be functionally the same as performing a clean installation, but there may be small underlying differences.

Another method is to upgrade to Windows 10, head into the new Settings app, and go to 'Update and recovery.' From there, you can click 'Reset this PC,' which gives you the option of reinstalling Windows 10 and either a) keeping your apps and files, or b) wiping everything clean. Again, this isn't quite the same as a clean installation, but it's very similar.

What’s a clinician to do? Debates about clinical trials, patient populations, and statistical analyses can seem hollow and distant when looking at an anxious patient in an exam room. At that moment, all that matters is what’s best for your patient. Yet clinically relevant data, and more importantly, rigorous discussion of that data, is the means to the end. Professional clinicians quite often need the former in order to effectively deliver the latter. To wit, two similar journal articles were recently published that arrived at two very different conclusions. Let’s take a look:

The first is entitled, Comparison of Automated Oscillometric Versus Auscultatory Blood Pressure Measurement, by Dr. Johanna Landgraf, Dr. Stanley Wishner, and Dr. Robert Kloner, and was published in the American Journal of Cardiology. The authors raise concerns about the use of automated oscillometric BP devices and reported a “significant difference observed in BP readings taken simultaneously using the auscultatory/mercury technique and the automated oscillometric technique.” They reported that manual auscultatory results were typically higher than those using automatic oscillometric devices, particularly in elderly patients (the mean discrepancy between methods was reported to be about 2 mm Hg). The main concern raised is the potential for some hypertensive patients to be undertreated as a result.

The second article, published in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension, is titled Why Automated Office Blood Pressure Should Now Replace the Mercury Sphygmomanometer, written by Dr. Martin G. Myers. Myers pulls no punches when he states that, “the mercury sphygmomanometer has now become an impediment to optimum care of the patient with hypertension in routine clinical practice.” His argument is based on the myriad number of extraneous factors associated with manual BP measurement in the real world, which result in BP readings of variable quality and accuracy. Automated oscillometric devices which have been independently validated for accuracy, Myers argues, can help eliminate such variability.

Scott Scargle, MSEE, is the OEM Technology Manager here at SunTech, and has over 13 years of engineering experience designing and building medical devices. He has some interesting technical observations about the Landgraf, et al article that are worth noting.

While the authors claim that the differences between manual and automated methods were significant, Scargle is not so sure. “I am not convinced that an observer mean SYS of 133 +/- 20 mmHg is significantly greater than the device mean SYS of 131 +/- 18 mmHg. I think these values are quite comparable in most clinical settings, especially when you consider that most auscultatory BPs done by medical staff have much, much faster deflation rates than in this study.” In addition, since the Landgraf, et al study used the same cardiologist for all of the manual readings, Scargle wonders if an observer-to-observer comparison would have shown similar differences.

Scargle also notes that there can be differences between the automatic devices themselves. “Something that is often overlooked is the fact that oscillometric NIBP devices all have their own proprietary algorithms that were developed differently,” he says. Specifically, some devices may use publicly-available data to calculate their algorithms, while others conduct clinical trials on patient populations. The size and makeup of the population therefore affects the accuracy of the resulting algorithm. For example, SunTech has been able to hone its algorithms over two decades of regular clinical testing. As a result, its devices are quite accurate. “Large differences among devices should not exist because they all have to meet basic regulatory accuracy requirements,” observes Scargle, “but differences do exist—especially on more difficult patient populations.”

Scargle makes one last observation about the Landgraf, et al article. “Regarding device-observer comparisons, our own research has shown that many oscillometric devices read ‘low’ on hypertensive patients, so I don’t find their results surprising. SunTech has taken measures to address this and it’s our hope that other automated blood pressure manufacturers would do the same.”
